❆ Ancestry

As a boy, Cheng-Long succumbed to peer pressure from his clan, which continues to hold as values and beliefs ingrained in his mind. Unlike the Okumura twins, he neither challenges nor questions the status quo. Indoctrinated into his clan's severe tradition of exorcising demons without mercy, Cheng-Long presently holds a lofty position in the upper first class as a successful employee of the True Cross Order in the Taiwanese branch.

In the distant past, an ancestor Liu thought Usamaro harmless until the demon wrecked a village by devouring the villagers' memories. Usamaro was summarily sealed away, but the damage had been done, and this betrayal of Liu's trust persisted down the line as unquestionable distrust of demons. The clan's understandable ruthlessness stems from the previous experience of holding out a hand and getting burned. Beside this school of thought, the clan also discourages coexistence with demons, who are believed to bring misfortune to humans.

Cheng-Long's willingness to make friends with the clan's sworn enemies was extremely problematic, and corrective action was taken as seen in the movie's flashback. On the day he was ordered to exorcise the pug demon, he learned a valuable, hard lesson: if one cannot stomach the idea of withholding mercy from a demon, one shouldn't become an exorcist. It's not simply because this would make the candidate a poor exorcist; on the other hand, it implies Cheng-Long's buried grief and guilt of having been forced to do just so unwillingly in his childhood. While he continues to be an exorcist per his clan's tradition, he discourages those with the choice from following his dramatic path.
