In my opinion, Cheng-Long is the best part of the animated adaptation of Blue Exorcist. I hope that he debuts in the manga one day, even if it's under vastly different circumstances to the movie's plot.

There's a lot of potential in Cheng-Long's character. He's every bit as eccentric as the senior exorcists in the manga who see past Rin's demonic heritage, and his wacky sense of humor would suit the paperback atmosphere. More than that, he bears parallels to both Rin and Yukio, and I think that would be an interesting addition to the current conflict in the manga, where the brothers are so disconnected from each other while the plot is entering a global scale.
I can dream!
If nothing else, the director has expressed the faint desire to direct a sequel to the movie – one that might debut John after Yukio is spirited away to Mexico, placing them in a position to team up. This idea, though just that and nothing more at this time, has promise in fleshing out the Lius and . . . giving us more Cheng-Long! That is Most Important. I'm still dreaming, here.
What ultimately drew me in was the grace with which Cheng-Long carries himself in spite of his guilt ridden past and grievances with family relationships. This is the mark of a strong person: He hurts inside, but through sheer force of discipline takes up the reins of responsibility to shoulder his clan's expectations. The incident with the pug demon is a powerful but distant memory for him; he's moved on as much as his sore heart would allow him, and nobody is any the wiser to his inner weight.
There are as many issues with bottling everything up as there are with letting it all out, but Cheng-Long is a 30-year-old man. Unleashing the full force of feelings is Rin's job as the protagonist. As far as Cheng-Long's concerned, he's been very adult through his adolescence and adulthood. That's the kind of writing I appreciate in fiction.
