❆ Brother

"Souvenir in BLUE EXORCIST THE MOVIE," the short story that takes place after the movie, is a narrative of Yukio welcoming Cheng-Long back to Japan. In this same story, we learn that Cheng-Long has a younger brother named John.

John is as much Cheng-Long's polar opposite as Rin is Yukio's. He has an English name, wears modern leather jackets, likes automobiles and studying abroad, and is "abnormally popular with women." Cheng-Long, on the other hand, is traditionally Taiwanese to the core, and the company he keeps is predominantly male. Cheng-Long's description of John paints the image of a masculine youth; in contrast, Kazue Kato said in an interview that he himself has a feminine or neutral aesthetic touch.

Most significantly, John seems sociable with an easygoing sing-song tone when he calls his brother. He goes through the formality of greeting before Cheng-Long grumbles for the matter to be sent by email and hangs up. This is the first scene in the short story; already, we see stark contrasts in personality between Cheng-Long and John.

But they both like dogs.

The souvenir: John asks Cheng-Long for a souvenir from Japan. In an uncharacteristic show of juvenile stubbornness, Cheng-Long scours various hot spots throughout the country with Yukio as his hapless guide. The blind pursuit of an item he doesn't know the name of is strange even to him, and he later apologizes.

"I told him to send the matter by mail and be done with it. Do you think I can tell him, 'My phone broke, so I can't read the mail'? As an older brother, my image will be affected." — Cheng-Long to Yukio, regarding his broken phone and John's unread email request

If the movie focuses on Cheng-Long as an exorcist, the short story pictures him as a brother, which aligns his role closer to that of Rin. In recent chapters of the Blue Exorcist manga, Rin all but begs Yukio to open up and ask for help, which is a sentiment that Cheng-Long admits to sharing when he confesses that he'd been waiting for John to ask something of him. At the same time, he laments his lack of a casual relationship with his brother, as his own terseness doesn't jive well with John's social habits. Although great at his job, where he often goes after demons alone in the chaos, Cheng-Long has difficulty communicating outside of his professional realm, indicating that he's entirely rooted in the world of exorcism and nowhere else.
