In the contemporary world of the Blue Exorcist, unorthodox hair color is explained by dye or demonic heritage. Official commentary on Cheng-Long's character design suggests that his light blue hair stems from the latter, rather than artificial means. Considering his clan's philosophy on demons, this is a fairly scandalous implication.

"Liu's sky blue hair would look like a wig if it was too strong, so we created a pattern to compare the colors. Since many characters have a realistic hair color unless it was dyed, we went with a shade that doesn't deviate too much from this work's worldview." — regarding Cheng-Long's hair color in an interview

This is purely conjecture, but I believe an ancestor Liu lay with a demon long before the debacle surrounding Usamaro. The clan's amorous ties to a demon of the past would reasonably lower the guard of a descendant into allowing another friendly demon to roam free. Consequently, Usamaro was unleashed onto the oblivious villagers, and the village in the storybook was brought to ruin, staining the clan's perception of human-demon relations. It would also explain why the clan thought it so necessary for Cheng-Long to perish all thoughts of befriending demons at a young age, in order to prevent him from committing the same mistake as his picture book ancestor.
